EDUCATION:

BACKGROUND:

Upon receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Dr. Azarm joined the University of Maryland, College Park, where he is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and an affiliate Professor of Applied Mathematics & Statistics, and Scientific Computation Program. 

His research areas of interest are centered on engineering optimization and decision-making models and methods, including (i) design optimization, (ii) decision support systems, and (iii) design for market systems. His research program has been funded by the government agencies and industry, including AFOSR, AFRL, NASA, NAVAIR, NSF, NSWC, ONR, Black & Decker, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin.  His former PhD students have been employed as a faculty member, scientist or engineer at universities, research organizations and industry in the US and overseas, including Johns Hopkins University, Naval Postgraduate School, Washington State University, Seattle University, University of California San Diego, University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute, Air Force Research Lab, Amazon, Boeing, Facebook, Ford, General Motors, Goodman, Stryker.

He is a Review Editor and Senior Advisor of (journal of) Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization, and an Editorial Board Member of International Journal of Reliability and Safety. He was Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Mechanical Design (ASME Transactions), Associate Editor of (journal of) Mechanics-Based Design of Structures and Machines. He was a member of the Board of Editors of the ASME Transactions, member and chair of the Advisory Board for the Journal of Computing and Information Science in Engineering (ASME Transactions). He was an Associate Editor of the ASME Journal of Mechanical Design, and Guest Editor of the special issues of the ASME Journal of Mechanical Design on the topic of “Robust and Reliability Based Design”, and on “Designing Complex Engineered Systems”.

Dr. Azarm is currently serving as Publication Chair of the ASME Design Engineering Division (DED), was an operating board member of the ASME Systems and Design Group, one of the largest groups in ASME, member-at-large of the ASME Committee on Division Operations and Training, and a member of the ASME DED Advisory Committee. He is a past Chair of the ASME DED Advisory Committee, past Chair of the ASME DED, one of the largest divisions in ASME, past Chair of the ASME Design Automation Committee, past Conference Chair and Paper Review Chair of the ASME Design Automation Conference. Among numerous awards, he received the ASME Design Automation Award for his “sustained and meritorious contributions to research in Design Automation, specifically in computational design optimization and engineering decision making.” He is a Fellow of the ASME and a Senior member of AIAA.

Research Interests:

  • Design Optimization:  Single and multi-objective optimization; optimization under uncertainty; multiple coupled subsystems (system of systems) optimization; approximation assisted optimization with computationally expensive simulations
  • Decision Support Systems: Multi-attribute decision analysis strategies for selection; capturing decision maker’s preferences under risky conditions; integration of business and engineering decisions
  • Design for Market Systems: Design of competitive single products, product lines, bundled (multi-category) products with upstream (parts/subassembly/assembly suppliers) and/or downstream (manufacturers, retailers, service providers) supply chain considerations under uncertainty
  • Applications: Consumer electronics (e.g., smart phones, tablet computer); heat exchangers; power tools; power electronics; data centers; oil refineries; oil/gas pipelines; unmanned vehicles (walking robots, unmanned aerial vehicles, unmanned underwater vehicles); network infrastructure, and numerous other applications 

Recent Research Focus:

  • Co-design: Optimization of system's design and control together, including decomposition-based co-design; multi-vehicle routing and control
  • Optimization- and learning-based health monitoring, with applications to oil/gas pipelines and other structures
  • Verification and Validation (V&V) of spatio-temporal systems
  • Dynamic data-driven system performance prediction using simulation and sensor measurement data
  • Task planning for multi-agent systems with variable communication availability

  • Co-design (optimization of system's design and control together), multi-vehicle optimal vehicle routing and control (funded by ONR)
  • Risk-based path planning for UAV operations over inhabitted areas (funded by NAVAIR)
