Dr. Schwarm is a metallurgy subject matter expert (SME) at the Naval Surface Warfare Center - Carderock Division in Bethesda, MD, where he performs applied materials research for the U.S. Navy submarine and surface fleets. As a Navy scientist, he works in alloy research, engineering materials evaluation and risk assessment, process optimization, manufacturing and specification management, and failure analysis. An MS and PhD graduate from the University of Maryland, he performed his dissertation research on nuclear structural materials as Department of Energy Nuclear Energy University Programs (DOE-NEUP) fellow.

Dr. Schwarm is also a Partner and Senior Metallurgy Advisor for the Naval Welding Instutite (NWI), and educational startup offering courses and training in metallurgy, welding, and non-destructive testing with a focus on shipbuilding and naval applications.

Interests include alloy design and development, integrated computational materials engineering (ICME), metals manufacturing and processing, materials for extreme environments, steels and non-ferrous corrosion-resistant alloys, mechanics of materials, materials sustainability, materials for green energy, and metallurgical failure analysis.
